Meet Smart Girl Marley Dias: Champion for Reading Diversity

Marley Dias, an 11 year old New Jersey native, decided to take a stand for diversity in reading by spearheading a project to put more books in schools that feature female African American protagonists. Her project, #1000BlackGirlBooks, has successfully garnered more than a thousand books relevant to her cause over the past three months with the intention to distribute them schools in her area, as well as the parish of St. Mary in Jamaica, her mother’s birth country. Dias’ passion for her project and candid call for change has earned her a ton of media attention and celebration, as well as contributions to her cause, with Barnes and Noble Booksellers and Shutterfly among her supporters. Although Dias surpassed her goal for #1000BlackGirlBooks on February 1, she hopes to continue to collect and distribute to more schools where kids are in need of diverse books.
